I wondered, last August, how animals endure it — the tiny ever-pumping lungs of hummingbirds, the lungs of bighorn sheep shouldering their way up mountains, they must get filled with smoke too, right? It’s not good for people who work outdoors, or who have asthma or damaged lungs. On the whole, people do not value them.

Coming down from the emotional high we noticed our grumbling stomachs: time to eat. We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. All bird and animal pictures are Brad’s. However, a mere 10 minutes later we got another male Red Crossbill singing from the top of a pine tree.

Puffins growl like chainsaws, and one in Britain was seen carrying 62 fish in her beak. One morning I skipped a trip to Damariscotta in order to go bird banding with the teens, who chatted animatedly as we trouped into the woods with mist nets and bags of equipment. Fueled by Sue’s enthusiasm, our group crowded around excitedly but silently.

I have seen both Long-tailed and Tree Pangolins , Greater Cane Rat , several species of monkey and duiker, Royal Antelope , Pel’s Anomalure (a giant flying squirrel), huge casqued hornbills, Great Blue Turacos and numerous other birds and mammals for sale along the roadsides. What are the chances of survival for these shy forest denizens?
