I particularly question the use of chimpanzees in medical research. I recently was escorted through a large primate research laboratory by its director. If they are "only" animals, if they are beasts which abstract not, then my comparison is a piece of sentimental foolishness. But chimpanzees can abstract.

Between staying warm/cool, finding food, avoiding predators, migrating thousands of miles every year, finding mates, raising chicks and doing all this at the mercy of the elements, it makes sense that they have more brainpower than just simple instinct to run on. I look forward to more research being done in this field.

The 10-year-old Boa was pregnant and had been raised by McAdam since it was a baby. And their behavior is completely consistent with what we would understand as "animal sentience." Whether we like to admit it or not, we (culturally) view animals on a "sentience spectrum."

Back then I was a young child and never thought any different about greyhounds or indeed any other animal. He would not return for many hours.
