An expanse of habitat as vast as Murchison Falls NP in Uganda, as excessively generous in beauty and biodiversity, permits endless ways to experience both its birds and animals. Murchison Falls NP truly excels as a place to see the kind of wild mammals Africa is legendary for. Mind boggling, I answer!

Southern Grey-headed Sparrow , Cape Wagtails and Common Bulbuls used the screen or nearby snags as perches to see who was coming along the walkway. The animals listed below were all seen from the hide and went to make up a day total of 78 birds and 20 mammals, but only the one reptile on this winter’s day.

In some cases someone was blown away by the scenery and thought “this needs saving” In some cases someone thought “there seems to be a lot of animals here, let’s keep things that way” Still others happen because no one had done anything with the land yet and no one wanted the land anyway. But they are very cute!

Nearly 30,000 of these acres is set aside as dry wilderness habitat for other birds, animals and other various living creatures. We camped at the Elephant Butte Reservoir Campground, overlooking the lake, with the hopes of finding some more birds in the area. Did I mention that they were a couple of hundred yards out there?

When you think of invasives, you think of the birds that have been helped by human beings to get where they are, such as House Sparrow or European Starling. They feed on insects stirred up by the herds, at times sitting on the animal itself picking off ticks and other insects. This species is primarily an insectivore.

That’s one reason, probably the biggest reason, why we don’t have centennials for animals that become extinct in the wild. Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked.
