White-tailed Eagles normally take flight silently, yet, while checking some Common Starlings and hoping for Rosy Starlings , I heard a few noisy wing-beats, enough to turn and see a young eagle flying with a wing tag. This is clearly one of its first flights – it may have even taken the first flight today!

Oh, the joys of urban birding… Add half a dozen Ferruginous Ducks (cover photo), two Whiskered and 40 Black Terns to the previous picture, plus an eagle, an immature White-tailed Eagle. A man walking his two small dogs is passing by the eagle, looking down at grass and not seeing the largest raptor in Europe.

Michigan's removal of the bald eagle and gray wolf from the list will be the most significant change in species protection the state has seen in years. Tags: bald eagle Gray Wolf us endangered species. That's what Michigan's State Department of Natural Resources says. State environmental groups are showing "cautious optimism.".

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History boasts an entire collection of skins of birds native to the DC area, from large Bald Eagles to tiny Eastern Screech Owls. In fact, the new exhibit is quite possibly the best I’ve ever seen, well worth the $100+ million price tag. Audubon painting, depicting an eagle.

This time it's Little Black: Stay tuned also for photos of the eagle's nest down the block that has a baby! I hadn't realized how enormous eagles are; they dwarf hawks. What's in Pahokee you ask?

Here's the good news: This is a very readable explanation of how animals in the Hundred Heartbeat Club (there are 100 or fewer individuals in the wild today) got to be in the club. This is irksome, as the premise is that we need to save the animals (and which ones is an interesting discussion) because we will suffer if they are gone.
