A large number of people I talk to believe the island to be next to the city of Santa Cruz, California. At the very northern end of their breeding range in the Channel Islands, they are strictly a Californian bird as far as the U.S. Many people, birders and otherwise, if a poor grasp on the realities of this place. This is not true.

The Sacramento River NWR was established 1989 by the authority provided under the Endangered Species Act, Emergency Wetlands Resources Act, and the Fish and Wildlife Act. Kirtland’s Warbler is a classic niche species; they breed in only very specific conditions, which occur in only a very specific area. That is a big difference compared to the 2,000+ singing males detected in 2012, well above the recovery goal for this species set by the U.S. this species breeds.
