For the record, I am opposed to violence in behalf of animals. I can't think of anything that does more harm to the cause of animal liberation. The FBI served a search warrant Monday on a Salt Lake City home occupied by a supporter of the Animal Liberation Front. The agents took computers, papers and other items it thought to be related to "animal enterprise terrorism," Young said, reciting language from the warrant. A federal judge in Iowa issued the warrant.

Why is it surprising that I have little to say about the nature of rights? It would only be surprising to one who assumes that my case for animal liberation is based upon rights and, in particular, upon the idea of extending rights to animals. But this is not my position at all.

It is a merit of utilitarianism, with its stress on happiness and unhappiness, that lower animals must be considered along with human beings, so that they are not debarred from full or direct consideration because they are not "rational." Perhaps Smart was still thinking (in 1980) of Kant versus Bentham, rationality versus sentience.
