Increased scrutiny of practices long considered the norm in wildlife management, including predator hunts, commercial trapping, the legal culling of non-game birds like American Crows, and some of the research protocols used to track and translocate wild animals. Capturing wild animals for live trade and captivity should not be permitted.

A third of a century ago, when the modern animal-liberation movement was in its infancy, Martin published an essay entitled “A Critique of Moral Vegetarianism,” Reason Papers (fall 1976): 13-43. You will, therefore, agree with Martin about moral vegetarianism but not about Christianity. Another reason is moral.

Because I've been thinking about the evolution of my own thinking--and languaging--regarding animal rights. Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. Then again, so do people who kill animals for a living. Tags: Activism Ethics Language. Why all the quotation marks?

Perhaps it is the industry's inability to evolve morally that is behind the times. This was my reality check for today: someone who defends animal agriculture as a tradition (i.e., Besides, is the "modern" veal crate something to be proud of? It's a great spin, though, making us appear like we're somehow way behind the times.

But the HSUS is by no means an animal-rights organization; it is an animal welfare organization. At least it sounds like it's interested in the welfare of all animals in the rodeo, while the VHS statement is ambiguous at best, and contradictory at worst. Societies evolve morally.
