I not only learned about Harvey Milk, but about the early stages of the gay rights movement (which is ongoing today when one looks at all the right-wing flutterings over gay marriage.) It made me think though about the animal rights movement. Are we really a social movement like gay rights and civil rights?

I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. People have a relationship, whether or not they are aware, to the term "animal rights." But I don't want to talk about PeTA.

I am the Interim Executive Director of two organizations that help former foster youth (the same orgs I chaired for a couple of years, but resigned from the boards to take this position), and it's only for a couple of months and as I always say, I can do just about anything for a couple of months. It's comical. It's absurd.

Lesson #20 We still don't know what will make a critical mass of people go vegan. I had "Places I Go/People I Know" for a while, which was accurate.

Need reminding why cruelty to animals is wrong? I assume a nature and nurture view of things rather than one or the other.)

Finally, if you know someone who gravitates toward the philosophical issues around our use of animals, this is a good book. I say "if you know someone" because this isn't a book I'd recommend to vegans for their vegan education efforts. Then again, he is not against the consumption of animals, " in general " (198).

Oprah's a huge Heifer International fan, and how people who are concerned with justice can give to that organization shocks me. And 99% of the population (as in, 1%, I believe, are vegans) doesn't care. It's particularly ironic for a black woman to support Heifer International. And The Girl Effect is promoting that form of slavery.

Most moral vegetarians list fish and fowl as animals one should not eat. Vegan vegetarians who eat only vegetables, fruit, and nuts do not completely remove all microorganisms from their food, even with repeated cleaning. The question can be raised: Why should these organisms be killed and others not be killed?

It is certainly likely that a similar phenomenon would occur if vegan vegetarianism became a widespread movement in the U.S. More important, it might be a much more efficient means of changing practice to stage protests at meat-packing companies, put pressure on congressmen, and work through existing humane organizations.
