On The Respectful Emperor

Animal Person

I've been having a difficult time blogging both here and at Animal Rights & AntiOppression lately because I feel like my thoughts are like " Groundhog Day." There are few animal rights stories in the news. Not the day, the film, where Bill Murray experiences the same day over and over again. That's respect.

On Surreal Lobster Advocacy

My self-appointed job in this blog is to think critically about how our human lives intersect with those of sentient nonhumans, in action and thought. The message I hear is: tormenting animals before you brutally torture and slaughter them is wrong, but brutally torturing and slaughtering them without the preceding torment is okay.

I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. People have a relationship, whether or not they are aware, to the term "animal rights." And not necessarily for animals.

Animal Person

Here's another direct action and its result, as described in an interview by Larry Mantle on KPCC Radio (it's the one called " Animal Rights vs. Animal Testing "). He speaks of the "mixed message of the animal rights community" that animals are so much like us, yet not enough like us to experiment on.

Vegan Atheist 40+ Parenting

Animal Person

I was going to change Animal Person to Vegan Atheist 40+ Parenting and come back to blogging. Doesn't have a ring to it at all, but a young man at Whole Foods yesterday called himself an "animal person" while ordering a roast beef wrap and I thought: Note to self-must change blog name if going to resume blogging.
