Yet, I was not aware of any of Arjan’s big year updates in English, so I had no clue where he was or how many species he managed to see. After 3 months of South and Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Australia, Arjan’s count stood at 2,060 species. And I wanted to learn about his travels in detail.

Ever the moral perfectionist, Franklin argued that the turkey was a much more honorable and determined fowl, and suggested the bird – as an “original Native of America” – would make a decidedly more fitting avian mascot for the United States (seemingly implying – incorrectly – that the Bald Eagle is not an indigenous New World species).

Based on the number of species recorded, it looks like we also had pretty good coverage. 744 Species. We recorded a very good percentage of bird species that were possible including typically tough ones like quail-doves, Sharpbill, Black-crowned Antpitta , and the cotingas. Species Missed. GRAY-HOODED GULL.

While the species favors forested hills at moderate elevations ( source ), there are no hills at all here at Nanhui, so maybe these individuals are outcasts or just eccentrics. Chestnut-winged Cuckoo: This could be your host species! In the HBW, there are about 40 species with the word “plain” in the species name.

I like seeing as many species as possible on my life list, year list, state list, patch list, any kind of list. But even in summer I can usually count on 60+ non-endemic species per visit, and in winter, a decent effort can usually result in 80 or more species. Large groups of nighthawks have been seen flying during the day, and other birds that winter in South America are just starting to move through in huge numbers. Although those species can also be chanced upon during the day, it’s much easier to see other shorebirds, including this standard suite of waders: Whimbrel and Willet.
