People have moved useful plants and animals around with them as long as they had the wit to do so. They took dogs to Australia, chickens across the Pacific, rabbits to England, horses to the New World, and then brought potatoes back. California Quail are familiar birds to West Coast birders of North America, and Kiwis too now.

Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. One of the animal keepers brought her to me, and I put her in my clinic. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

While DDT is still used some places in the world, it has largely disappeared from use in North America. Birds aren’t the only animals who have made strong comebacks thanks to the Endangered Species Act.
