Ka’ena Point is also a breeding ground for the Federally protected Laysan albatross, where 45 nests were being carefully monitored by the non-profit Pacific Rim Conservation. The oldest Laysan albatross was last seen raising a chick on Midway Atoll in 2016, at age 66. They were simply sent to Family Court.

They’re lucky: unlike albatrosses and other seabirds, they are not ship followers and so can mostly avoid guy-lines and nets. For the next four years, the bird will not touch land.

People ascribe near mythic status to the members of the family Delphinidae (and other related families). Yes, the same Kaikoura I keep banging on about that is a great place to see albatrosses. Which has always mystified me slightly. Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air.

It is a fascinating book that teaches while it entertains, that offers research-informed arguments for bird protection and conservation in the guise of vibrant design. It would be a great gift for the novice birder, the experienced naturalist, or a fun read if you want to treat yourself.

In Hawaii I stood on a beach as albatrosses fledged and Tiger Sharks prowled for the less successful ones. Ugandan Mangabeys were part of my family once. There is no feeling in the world like knowing your helping something you care about, whether its sharks or puffins, protecting forests or reefs, advancing science or communities.

In spite of this New Zealand does have an iconic family of birds that has served as an emblem for the country for over a century, the kiwi. They are commonest where they are intensively protected and managed, but these places are often remote and hard to visit. They would all be wrong, as New Zealand has no official National Bird.
