These remote islands, some more than 1,000 miles from Honolulu, are home to huge globally-significant colonies of Laysan and Black-footed Albatross, among many others. Many of these islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and one of the most important areas is Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.

In particular the South Island destination of Kaikoura is world-renowned for the flocks of albatrosses and giant petrels floating right off the pelagic boat, and the ease of the trip makes it a must-visit for any visiting birder. We soon were close to the Mokohinau Islands , one of the many islands in the area that serve as wildlife refuges.

Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Here is a flock of endangered species. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota. This is my flock of Laysan Albatross , on Midway Atoll. Crested Auklets form some of the biggest, most impressive flocks and formations that I have ever seen, on islands in Alaska.

That is a big difference compared to the 2,000+ singing males detected in 2012, well above the recovery goal for this species set by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This male Short-tailed Albatross has fledged 2 chicks from Eastern Island, Midway Atoll, the only place in the U.S. this species breeds.

but I really feel I should nominate an albatross, if only because I love taunting Corey about them. Only trouble is, which of the seven species I saw this year do I pick? Black-browed Albatross by Duncan Wright (Click it to make it big.). Dragan had a real stunner for his Best Bird of the Year!
