Some birds breed in flocks, at least in part to avoid predation. In the case of these Tricolored Blackbirds , they are formed for DEFENSE. This is my flock of Laysan Albatross , on Midway Atoll. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota. Flocks are formed for many reasons. Smelling this is worse than death itself.

Yellow-billed Magpies are found just inland, and Tricolored Blackbirds can be found on Point Reyes (a legendary migrant trap) by the thousand in the fall. Hawaiian Petrel has become an annual visitor in recent years, and albatross are more abundant in this part of the state. We have a little bit of everything here. Fall through spring.

but I really feel I should nominate an albatross, if only because I love taunting Corey about them. I’ll go for the Black-browed Albatross , in celebration of the fact that conservation efforts have resulted in this species being downgraded from endangered to near threatened this year. He wrote about it in more detail here.

When it comes to breeding, Yellow-rumped Warblers are a good example of what many people regard as a “regular” bird. Male and female Yellow-rumps pair up on their breeding grounds, share duties in raising chicks, then politely part ways when fall migration comes. Lastly, I’ll leave you with Laysan Albatross.

But it happened at that moment that a lot of what I was looking at was avian in nature: a few crows, some sparrows, blackbirds, and other run of the mill inner-ring suburb fliers and flitterers. When Albatross alight in temporal alignment anything else is swamped out. A squirrel skittered by … a squirrel is not a bird.
