Some birds breed in flocks, at least in part to avoid predation. In the case of these Tricolored Blackbirds , they are formed for DEFENSE. This is my flock of Laysan Albatross , on Midway Atoll. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota. Flocks are formed for many reasons. Smelling this is worse than death itself.

I’ll go for the Black-browed Albatross , in celebration of the fact that conservation efforts have resulted in this species being downgraded from endangered to near threatened this year. When it comes to breeding, Yellow-rumped Warblers are a good example of what many people regard as a “regular” bird. Male and female Yellow-rumps pair up on their breeding grounds, share duties in raising chicks, then politely part ways when fall migration comes. Lastly, I’ll leave you with Laysan Albatross.
