Late last month, while searching for bears , woodpeckers and spirits of Greece, I deliberately avoided checking any news, especially from my home country. We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. In Africa, one elephant is being killed every 15 minutes. One may say so. And it gave me a hope.

whose occupants have already left for Africa, but a clump of elaborate closed nests of Spanish Sparrows hang underneath it. In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching. According to the latest data, 273 bird species were recorded in the national park, 160 of them breeding in it.

The majority of wildcats live today in Africa, and virtually none of them have provided the DNA from which supposed histories of domestication have been constructed by researchers. And I think he was speaking only of our American Kitties not the Wildcat of Africa. But they don’t live in North America. Unless we put them there.

In 2012, I reviewed The Jewel Hunter , an absorbing narrative in which author Chris Goodie travelled throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia to observe and photograph every Pitta species in the world. Hummingbird species, on the other hand, number in the hundreds. Jonas D’Abronzo.

And, to give his dream year a little more oomph, he created a grand once-in-a-lifetime goal: to track down and see every pitta species in the world in one year. I get my own idea of the lunacy of Gooddie’s quest when I talk to a friend who has birded Asia and Africa. And sun bears. And mosquitos. And leeches. And pit vipers.
