Only in Africa is it really easy to see a big variety. On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. Lion – much easier to see than an Aardvark In contrast to East Africa, encounters with mammals while out birding in Europe are relatively few.

Late last month, while searching for bears , woodpeckers and spirits of Greece, I deliberately avoided checking any news, especially from my home country. We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. In Africa, one elephant is being killed every 15 minutes. One may say so.

In fact, the best known member of the family, Central America’s aptly-named Resplendent Quetzal , looks less like Michoacán’s trogons than, say, Africa’s Narina Trogon , or the Red-naped Trogon of Indonesia. International teams compete for 6 days and 5 nights with the express purpose of recording the most bird species, by sight or by call, while the clock ticks down. The six international teams were as follows: The Zululanders – South Africa. The E-Birders – Cornell, USA. An Andean Flicker on the ground in the Peruvian Andes.

whose occupants have already left for Africa, but a clump of elaborate closed nests of Spanish Sparrows hang underneath it. In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching. According to the latest data, 273 bird species were recorded in the national park, 160 of them breeding in it.
