Dongfang is a smallish coastal city on the west coast of Hainan – with one or two main roads, some massive and apparently empty apartment blocks right next to the beach – and some strange swampy area pretty close to the main road. Here, nervous Cattle Egrets trying to quit smoking pace restlessly on buffalos.

I pushed for Wikipedia to adopt them, and then to follow the taxonomy, and given the dominance of Wikipedia in Google search results, this is no small thing. Similarly when the Hoopoe and Cattle Egret were split, these are widespread birds with huge ranges even after the split. I’m not blind to the list’s faults, though.

Long before that time Mexican domesticated Turkeys had been adopted by Native Americans in the American Southwest as well. This is the time of year that we rightfully contemplate the noble Turkey.

That's one of the reasons adopting wasn't a stretch for me at all mentally. Just ask former cattle rancher Howard Lyman , who is now a vegan and animal rights activist. I'm not one of those people who thinks family is composed of only humans or humans who are biologically related.

One ought to adopt the best means. Cattle might be overproduced because of government subsidies and new markets found for meat. But so could lots of other things: wearing an animal rights button, picketing meat-packing houses, and so on. So, if one wants to change the present practice, the best means is to stop eating meat.
