Rock & Rawhide , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to increase adoptions for dogs and cats in shelters by providing toys and other items that serve as a form of distraction therapy, reducing the stress and noise levels. Research has shown that if noise and stress are reduced, adoptions go up!

Did you know that every year, of the 8 million dogs and cats that enter animal shelters, 3 million of these healthy and treatable pets are euthanized? This new campaign, sponsored by The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund, and the Ad Council, hopes to reverse this trend and find homes for these homeless, lovable pets.

Like every dog they are vulnerable to homelessness and mistreatment. Aside from the breed’s abuses, one finds that adopting out this breed is highly difficult. However, any breed of dog that has been abused, neglected, or homeless may be aggressive to humans or other dogs. As a breed, pit bulls have a bad rap.

An Animal Person reader wrote me with the following question: There are many species of cichlids in Lake Victoria that are on the verge of extinction, and most are hardy and small enough to be kept in an aquarium. So when we adopted a human baby we knew we'd have to teach that human to avoid Violet. We weren't planning to adopt another. but a friend who volunteers for a rescue group told me of a greyhound event around the corner from my house. When we adopted them we made a commitment to care for them for the rest of their lives.
