Having pets at a young age instills kids with a sense of confidence that they can take care of an animal and help it to live a thriving life. Have you ever seen a kid talk to a pet and the animal responds by wagging its tail or purring? Animals are unbiased companions, just what many kids need.

In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. Interesting that many of the grants this place gets specifically say they can't experiment on any domesticated animals (cats and dogs I guess.). There was a poster in the lunch room with four cute animals (a dog, cat, rabbit and something else.)

Many also learn responsibility, compassion, and empathy from having pets. Taking care of an animal can also provide a sense of self-worth. Choosing to adopt an animal from a shelter, especially an older dog or cat, can add to the sense of fulfillment, knowing that you’ve provided a home to a pet that may otherwise have been euthanized.

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.
