I strongly encourage people to adopt pound and shelter animals. Purebred or mixed breed? It is not necessary to pick a purebred dog for your first pet. Many mutts you can get from the pound or animal shelter make terrific pets. Try to find out what breeds are in your dogs background to help you better understand your dog’s behavior.

It reminded me of an adoption poster at the animal shelter. It certainly doesn't fill me with confidence in these people's skills in compassion and humane care. But I did get to walk around the floor. It was a rather grim place. There was a poster in the lunch room with four cute animals (a dog, cat, rabbit and something else.)

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.
