The Collins Bird Guide covers Europe, North Atlantic islands, much of North Africa and the Middle East. The Collins Bird Guide 2nd edition from 2009 was a much hated taxonomical revolution/nightmare, changing just about everything. We have been busy walking the beach and keeping an eye on our local Pied Oystercatchers and the two pairs that laid their eggs earliest for the 2018 breeding season and successfully hatched out their chicks have now lost their chicks to predation. Animal prints leading to and from a raided nest.

Pied Oystercatcher chick sheltering under an adult bird. There are several birds of prey in the area including Black Kites and Brown Falcons. Feral cats have been an issue in previous years and continue to be a problem along the length of Cable Beach that we monitor. Clumsy Pied Oystercatcher chicks not long out of the nest.

More than 50 years ago, the Hawaiian Goose (Nene) was one of the first birds listed under the Endangered Species Act, part of the inaugural “ Class of 1967 ”. In the case of the Hawaiian Goose ( Branta sandvicensis ), the public notice was published in the Federal Register on April 2, 2018.
