While preparing an article this week for a local newspaper on the nighttime denizens of Tobago, it crossed my mind that I never considered owls as a group, far less target species for any particular outing (except for a select few, upon which I shall expound here). This resulted in my only photograph of this species to date.

One of my favorite bird species living by my house is the Juniper Titmouse. Although the Juniper Titmouse is not officially a threatened species, its numbers have been declining due to loss of habitat. But a Bewick’s Wren did build a nest, which it promptly abandoned before laying any eggs. Others had more luck.

From now through the first week of November (2018) autumn leaves are peaking along the ridges and valleys of the Appalachians. Known as a warbler haven, 30+ species visit this bi-state park near the Kentucky and Virginia southern border. There are 2,037 acres to explore, including miles of abandoned logging roads and hiking trails.

I have observed this species many times (my eBird says 28 times this year alone) and never had one landing near me. and after the road construction (June 2018). Nowadays, it has a feeling of an abandoned construction site. This is clearly one of its first flights – it may have even taken the first flight today!

In total, there are eight species of hornbills in Borneo – the best place to see them seems to be the Kinabatagan River area (also known as Sukau). Another paper reviews information on Oriental Pied Hornbills raiding the nests of various bird species in Singapore and even pet bird cages.
