2014 has been a good year for us at 10,000 Birds. Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. While I think the gesture is nice, it appears to be more of a publicity stunt to head off environmental criticism of the 2014 Olympic Games construction. "We Russia won the right to host 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and major construction works are about to begin.

And it had been awhile: my last visit there was in 2014!) Then, after about half-an-hour of birding I took a break from scanning the far jetty through my scope and was amazed to notice a Razorbill floating right next to the jetty, nearly at my feet! When it popped up I managed to miss it again before it dove.

You guessed it right – the hunting lobby used their influence for political pressures. And that flight is illegal because EU legislation does not allow export of game meat from Serbia to EU.

Since I saw my first in February of 2014 at Breezy Point I have had two more encounters, both in February of 2015, both at Jacob Riis Park. This pair of birds on Jamaica Bay’s East Pond had been around for several days by the time that I got to see them in early September 2014. Lapland Longspur, 31 Oct 2010, 17 Feb 2014.
