My Year in Birding 2012

I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list. I came up just short of reaching 1,100 Birds on my overall World Life List , clocking in at 1,096, not a bad increase of 48 from the beginning of 2012 when I started at 1,048. January 2012 started off with a bang.

Stormbirds

On October 29 th 2012, “superstorm” Sandy devastated the east coast of the USA, affecting states from Florida to Maine, with severe damage in New Jersey and New York. Damage to New York included floods caused by the storm surge, power cuts and disruption to transport, including the loss of the railway line that crosses Jamaica Bay.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of March 2012)

Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was his first Osprey in New York State this year, seen perched on a nesting platform at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in early morning fog on Saturday. First Phoebe of 2019

10,000 Birds

I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2019 this morning at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. 2012 – 15 March. Actually, I saw my first five phoebes there, perhaps the most I ever saw in one location for my first of the season. For me, it is now officially spring! 2019 – 17 March. 2018 – 30 March. 2017 – 12 March.

I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2017 this morning, 12 March, at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, thus kicking off spring for myself over a week early. 2012 – 15 March. Best Bird of the Weekend (Great Backyard Bird Count 2012)

But on his boat ride around lower New York Harbor and Jamaica Bay on Sunday he found himself appreciating the Herring Gulls more than any other species. From Orange-crowned Warbler to Razorbill , from Lapland Longspur to Red-necked Grebe , from Northern Shrike to Gray Catbird , Corey had a heck of a weekend. Is he becoming a larophile?
