My Year in Birding 2012

I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list. I came up just short of reaching 1,100 Birds on my overall World Life List , clocking in at 1,096, not a bad increase of 48 from the beginning of 2012 when I started at 1,048. January 2012 started off with a bang.

On October 29 th 2012, “superstorm” Sandy devastated the east coast of the USA, affecting states from Florida to Maine, with severe damage in New Jersey and New York. We know that Corey and his family came through the ordeal safely, but what of the warblers?

Thus, I was surprised and a little saddened to learn from my Kentucky family that kids in the Bluegrass State go back to school next week. Corey will be in Queens, probably tracking rarities in real time at the East Pond of Jamaica Bay. No kid should be stuck in school in early August! How about you?

Predicting My Next Ten Queens Birds

This pair of birds on Jamaica Bay’s East Pond had been around for several days by the time that I got to see them in early September 2014. Say’s Phoebe – A self-found rarity at Edgemere while accompanied by my family made my day back on 05 October 2014. Purple Martin, 3 Jul 2010, 11 Apr 2011, 26 May 2012.

I started out my birding life sitting on Benches 2 and 7 at the Jamaica Bay NWR West Pond, my Peterson’s in my lap, studying Green-winged Teal, Northern Shovelers, and the occasional Pintail. But, as with many avian families, the more you look, the more complicated it gets. So much simpler than pinning down those warblers!
