It was July of 2012. I didn’t know what species of woodpecker it was, but I knew it was just in the clearing on the other side of the road. Black-backed Woodpeckers are non-migratory, although there have been documented intermittent irruptions of the species outside their normal range. It was a cool 48 degrees.

As 2013 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 , 2011 , and 2012 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. Only trouble is, which of the seven species I saw this year do I pick?

Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is considering changing the status of the endangered Black-capped Vireo : it has proposed delisting it entirely. The processes of listing and delisting a species under the Endangered Species Act are largely the same: FWS must propose a “rule,” which is published in the Federal Register.
