On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. The website gives you an idea of the birds you can hope to encounter and there have been ongoing studies taking place since 1986.

A breeding bird atlas is a special kind of book. For birders, it’s the extremely large book, shelved in a place where it can’t crush the field guides, used to research the history of a bird in their area. It included surveys of nocturnal and marsh birds, and a point count survey of songbirds.

A fact to which my wife will begrudgingly attest, as my memory is excellent when it comes to anything bird-related yet exceptionally poor otherwise. It was late December, 2012, and I slotted into a sizable group under the joint leadership of two highly respected birders. As prolific as the area was, the group was on the move.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago , it was our time to go and find some new birds! Our actual first bird for Queensland was a Common Myna at the airport and we were surprised that they did not seem as prolific as in Sydney. There’s nothing quite like being woken up by a bird literally laughing at you! Pair of Tawny Frogmouth.

Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, which comprises the twin volcanoes Gede and Pangrango (with gunung meaning “mountain”), surely must rate as one of the birding highlights of Southeast Asia, and is arguably the most important and well-known birding site on the island of Java. Allow for at least three days if you can.

Whilst we were planning our trip to Sydney we were hoping to fit some hiking and birding into our schedule and found a great website that would help us decide on some walks. As it was about 10kms long we knew it would take more than the 4 hours mentioned if we were birding, so would be a day out. We continued on along the trail.
