Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. Finally, the decision was made to release her in the summer of 2011. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

Tika and her longtime mate, Kobuk, had raised eight litters of puppies together and were enjoying their retirement years in the home of my friend, Anne. He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. Over the years Jethro approached rabbits as if they should be his friends, but they usually fled.

In 2011 their population was estimated at over 3,000 individuals, increasing steadily at 5-8% every year. Rabbits were introduced to the island by guano miners, which turned the previously verdant island into a giant sand dune; almost all vegetation was wiped out.

Rats arrived on ships and cats, foxes and rabbits were all introduced and they were all detrimental to the bird population. In 2011 they appeared all over Australia in much larger numbers than previously experienced and these unknown populations are always a pleasant surprise.
