Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. So, to cut things short, there is sickness all around me, and I have thus decided to have my February post whistle to that tune as well and give an update to the mysterious die-off amongst our Eurasian Blackbirds that occurred around my home turf in Heidelberg last summer – blogged about here. Significantly reduced flight distance.

As it was, we were only able to add Black-headed Gull for gull species there, along with Red-throated Pipit and Ferruginous Duck. We also saw a Blackbird and heard a Wren at the bottom of Kanoureses track at 18:00. We also counted a solid flock of 39 Marsh Sandpipers and 14 Greenshank there in Meneou.

But if you want herons and ducks and shorebirds and geese and egrets and swans and rails the best bet is the famed Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge along State Route 2 in Oak Harbor, Ohio. While at the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium I made two visits to the refuge, once at dawn and once early in the afternoon.
