Canadian police are investigating the reported killing of 100 huskies which had been used to pull tourist sleds in the ski resort of Whistler. An animal rights group claims the dogs were killed inhumanely by an outdoor adventure company and thrown into a mass grave. The company could not be reached for comment.

The love that Montgomery feels for the hawk and its wildness will never be reciprocated: a raptor is not a dog or a horse. It’s not clear from the book’s ending, but it sounds like she abandoned her nascent apprenticeship because of her traveling schedule, her marriage, and her own chickens who would certainly be killed if she kept a hawk.
