The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has defended its use of more than 100 pigs in explosive tests in Wiltshire. Some 119 pigs were used in the research at the Government's military research laboratory Porton Down, near Salisbury, between 2006 and 2009. He said 25 pigs were used in 2006, 19 in 2007, 40 in 2008, and 35 in 2009.

Although it was previously believed that cats were also safe, a cat in Iowa has now tested positive for the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. Potbelly and pygmy pigs are susceptible. Pet pigs may contract swine flu. The ASPCA recommends taking “steps to limit possible transmission from humans to pigs and vice versa.&#

It had twenty violations back in December 2009. In one case, a pen housing a large pig was constructed with slats that regularly caused the pig to fall when its feet fell through. The University of Wisconsin-Madison was cleared of animal welfare violations in a report released yesterday.
