The Brown Pelican is Louisiana’s state bird. The species reached pre-pesticide numbers by the late 1990s and was fully delisted in 2009. Pelicans are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Abandoned fishing line also threatens pelicans along with many marine animals.

In 2004, 2005, and 2009, it was ranked as the most dangerous city in the United States and in 2008 there were 2,333 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Birds can do that. Camden is the poster child for the post industrial collapse of American urban areas. It was once a beautiful city but it has fallen on the hardest of hard times.

It was back in July of 2009 , the day that I saw more species of tern than any other day of my life, and I have no pictures of my first Thalasseus sandvicensis because I had managed to forget my digiscoping adapter that day. Theoretical birding distant. Until recently I had only ever seen a single Sandwich Tern. Absurdly distant.

Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people. By the last year of the war, the US increased its military aid to the Greek Government and introduced a new weapon: the first napalm attack after World War II took place right here!
