In a quick review, you learn frigatebirds eat fish. The frigatebird we had in care in 2004 never ate the fish that we offered on her own. We “assist-fed” her – placing fish in her mouth and waiting to make sure she swallowed them – every meal. But for a weak, starving juvenile, there is the magic of fish to help.

In November 2008, a virus killed a 15-month-old Asian elephant calf named Malti. In May 2008, 41 of the 43 rays at the Calgary Zoo’s 37,000-litre touch-tank died. The zoo blamed human error for the deaths, saying it didn’t have the expertise to manage the fish and that a lack of dissolved oxygen led to the deaths.

On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. Behrstock, and Seth Davidson, with maps by Cindy Lippincott, Texas A&M University Press, 2008. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day.

Origins and classification describes the evolution of frogs from lobe-finned fishes; there are some gaps in the stages from fish to frog, but scientists have identified the earliest frog-like fossil as Triadobatrachus massinoti, a creature which lived in the area we know as Madagascar about 230 million years ago.
