Duck Numbers And Duck Stamp Sales No Longer Correlate

This has resulted in a reduction of the number of duck stamps sold. Sales of duck stamps have funded the preservation of wetlands and other wildlife habitat, which in turn has supported an increase in waterfowl populations. This has benefited both the waterfowl hunters and everyone else who likes ducks and their kin.

Grallards: New Zealand’s Next Extinction or Newest Species?

Unfortunately for the hunters these were already all extinct, and with the introduction of cats, rats, stoats and the like the only upland game bird, the New Zealand Quail , was fast on the way out too. Some wild Grey Ducks from the Northern Territory ( GDW45 Creative Commons ). I mentioned 2008 as the year I became aware of the issue.

Separating ducks and coots is one thing, but separating hawks and falcons? Seriemas are long-legged terrestrial hunters related to extinct terror birds (phorusrhacids). Interestingly, Proposal 491 didn’t initially present any new information, citing studies from 2006 and 2008. I think that would be a tough sell.

Charles Harper’s Birds & Words: A Review of a Classic Reborn

First issued in a limited printing in 1972, then re-issued by Ammo Press in 2008 after Harper’s death in June 2007, it contains images that are iconic and familiar, striking and unique. Graphic artist Todd Oldham writes in the 2008 preface that this font is called “kismet”. I can’t find any kismet-titled fonts that are swirley.

State firsts I have known (and one I haven’t)

First there was the Scott’s Oriole that showed up at the Catawba County feeder of the local bird store owner in February of 2008. Then there was the famous Tufted Duck at a water treatment plant in Winston-Salem in February of 2009. It stuck around for about a week. Just under a week for this one too.

I’m not a fan of some of the cuts to science, but National came in in 2008. she’s Texan. she shot a rhino (auctioned for conservation).

Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Giving a few hundred hunters something else to shoot, in my opinion, cannot be worth the blowback from tens of thousands of people who are willing to travel and spend just to watch the birds fly over. Isn’t that neat?
