In 2008, with my family decided to build the Limneo Lodge , a small accommodation with only 9 rooms. In the next year I visited the British Birdfair for the first time, which turned out to be the experience that changed my life. Since then, the majority of my guests became birders and wildlife photographers.

The last time I was out there was in January of 2008 and Daisy and I had really enjoyed both the boat ride and the island itself. The ride from Prisoner’s Harbor, where we had spent our day, to Scorpion Anchorage, was uneventful, though Desi did fall asleep and I did enjoy pretty good views of breeding-plumaged Pigeon Guillemots.

Islands, for various reasons, experience more extinctions than continents (with Africa being the only continent not suffering a bird extinction!). Then rumors leaked out that at this same site the mythical Red Owl could easily be seen, Madagascar Serpent Eagle was breeding and other rare birds and lemurs abounded.

What events transpire miles away that make a certain destination attractive to birds and wildlife in one way or another? We filmed these particular birds in early 2008 and this was when my videographer, Aderman, was still getting to grips with bird filming. I am often guilty of neglecting “place&# when birding.

Experiments in the field (the famed Asa Wright Nature Center veranda) involving Bananaquits and bananas came up with numbers ranging from 7 to 16, but a tanager always came along to interfere with Bananaquits’ noisy appreciation of their namesake fruit. Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans.

Penguins are also bellweathers of climate change; dwellers of remote areas you’ve (probably) never heard of; creatures who have developed unique, innovative ways of adapting to the harsh environments where they breed and rear chicks and the water environments in which they feed and swim.
