Conservation efforts have been sufficiently successful for the bird’s status to be downlisted, in 2018, from Critically Endangered to Endangered. In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections. It is run by Zoobotánico Jerez in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Environment.

Thankfully due to the long life span of this bird species the population appears to be somewhat stable at the moment. The Pied Oystercatcher sitting on eggs in the header photo has used that particular area of Cable Beach just north of the rocks since 2008 and the pair has only successfully raised one chick and that was in 2012.

With so much of the environment in Australia that is inaccessible at any time of year it does beg the question as to how many different bird species do arrive and then leave and never get observed! There had also been an increase in bird numbers since the previous survey in 2008/2009 and the number of birds had doubled.

A Field Guide to the Birds: Giving Field Marks of All Species Found in Eastern North America was published in 1934 by Houghton Mifflin (note–Peterson was 26 years old), after being rejected by four publishers. Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species.
