Conservation efforts have been sufficiently successful for the bird’s status to be downlisted, in 2018, from Critically Endangered to Endangered.

Thankfully due to the long life span of this bird species the population appears to be somewhat stable at the moment. The Pied Oystercatcher sitting on eggs in the header photo has used that particular area of Cable Beach just north of the rocks since 2008 and the pair has only successfully raised one chick and that was in 2012.

Like all other “Red Grouse”, Gilbert is a member of a subspecies of Willow Ptarmigan found in the heather moorland of Great Britain and Ireland, a population that’s treated by some authorities as a separate species.
