This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. After several game drives, once again we are at the front gate of the Gir National Park in the state of Gujarat.

This year is the eighteenth year since we discovered our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in Broome and it didn’t take us long to realise that they are not at all successful at raising young due to egg and chick predation. He last raised a chick successfully in 2016 and has nested in this area since 2008.

Raising and lowering its head, like stretching. A survey in 2011 in non-protected areas of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh confirmed the presence of the species at two locations. This many birds at the same site (out of 250 of the reserve checklist) have lightened our spirits, but still – no owlet! Humbly, we approach on foot.
