The Swallow-tailed Kites in Florida Are Now Heading South…

A friend of mine told me, she has been seeing small groups of Swallow-tailed Kites ( Elanoides furficatus ) in the general area; in south Florida. In about a week after the last count, no kite will be seen at or near the roost (Meyer 2004). The local kites at this time of the year are about to start breeding.

DeMuth Agrees to Plea Bargain

DeMuth was originally charged in connection with a 2004 lab break-in at the University of Iowa that caused more than $400,000 in damage. Instead, DeMuth will plead guilty to conspiring to damage a Minnesota company that breeds ferrets. His plea agreement does not mention the Iowa break-in.

This is an endemic breeding bird in North America and much is now being done by various federal and non-profit groups to ensure and foster its conservation. Piping plovers are always a treat to see, whether at their coastal or inland breeding grounds or whether at their southern wintering grounds.
