(In Storks, Ibises and Spoonbills of the World states that “disturbance by local people, tourists, and egg and zoo collectors has similarly reduced the colonies, and more protection is vital”. In 1890 an estimated 3,000 pairs nested in Birecik.)

Griffon Vultures have a long breeding season. The chicks need six months to develop so the adults lay their eggs in January. Isn’t it a bit late to breed? Why bother with such a risky journey if you aren’t going to breed? So why are these Griffons arriving now? They have to get out.

This first map is data from 2002 through 2003. In warm climates they can breed year round. They usually lay two eggs per clutch and most often, successive clutches will be laid while adults are still attending fledglings! Click on photos for full sized images. In Florida nesting has been reported in every month except January 1.

I found this little grouping of Guillemots, with parents, babies and even an egg. Re-introduction of the Red Kites in southern Scotland was started in 2003 with 40 birds released, for the most part in secret. What started as a small group of birds, with the hope they would make it on their own, is now a very strong breeding population.
