It is often useful to look at satellite images on Google Earth to see where there is suitable habitat for different bird species. When we decided to go to see what bird species there were in the undeveloped areas at Changi Business Park we encountered several species of bird that we did not observe anywhere else in Singapore.

Another really good feature of Singapore is the excellent public transport system. We encountered over thirty species of birds around the Singapore Sports Hub on each visit and the best location we found was close to the Singapore Indoor Stadium. It is very easy to get around the island and it is also very cheap.

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. What is surprising is quite how many species did end up here, and how economically unimportant they were.

We were then able to walk down Upper Thomson Road and get public transport back to our hotel. By the time we reached the Upper Thomson Road we had a spent three hours sauntering through the park and had a list of over forty bird species. Sign for Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. Common Gliding Lizard.

Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. My favourite site in Singapore is Paser Ris.

Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. We saw over 50 species of birds during the afternoon and despite all the warnings we did not see any snakes! They have lovely zebra stripes and a leathery flap on their long bills.
