The Storks of Africa

Africa has more than its fair share of storks, with 8 of the world’s 19 species gracing the continent. Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. It is also related to Wood Stork of the Americas and Milky Stork of Asia.

Birding the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve in Newfoundland

The inscrutable species frustrated me and I found myself especially stumped by the difficulty I had distinguishing them, and wildly mystified by the excitement they inspired in my fellow-birders. We later signed up for a whale and birdwatching tour with Captain Wayne , who had a smallish 12-person boat. Happy puffins.

Seabirding off Cape Point

It was a Benguela Nino year, and pelagic seabirds were in super-abundance in the south eastern Atlantic, with the total of species by variety and number exceeding all expectations for the birders on the inaugural trip as we pitched and wallowed about in the rolling swells on our way out to the trawling grounds.

Polygynandry and avian swingers

Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks. Chacachacare Island

Chacachacare (pronounced shaka-shaka-reh ) is the westernmost of the Bocas islands off the northwestern tip of Trinidad. Chacachacare was also the site of a US Army base, a leper colony, and before that, a whaling station. Chacachacare also has Rufous Nightjar recorded, but we didn’t manage to snag that species.
