The area, including the University and several high schools, was put on lockdown and we were instructed to “shelter in place.” Northern Flickers have been intermittent, and for less confiding than the smaller birds, but when they’re around they can at least take on the squirrels.

The basic requirements for survival, food, shelter and water never seem to be in surplus. When it comes to a one stop shopping for food and shelter, no other plant is as widely used as the Cardon Cactus family. Our local Mexican Ground Squirrels are quite fond of the Chaparral Prickly Pear , or Nopal Cactus as it is called locally.

Domestic animal shelters don’t normally take wildlife and if they do it’s rare. Kitten milk replacement with heavy cream works in a pinch but squirrel or rabbit milk replacement is the only real substitute. It’s just not their function and against a few rules. I operate as a permitted rehab in Florida.

I don't know if she was being sarcastic, but in my town I see dead armadillos, opossums, raccoons, all manner of turtles, and squirrels dead in the middle of the road frequently. At least they're dead and it wasn't my fault, but I still have a responsibility.
