Guide to birding the Forgotten Road in the Djerdap National Park, Serbia

On the second day of that visit, the wardens suggested to try the “Forgotten” Road, once the main road to Romania, but today, after a dozen tunnels and a new riverbank road were constructed four decades ago, merely a track of a derelict and crumbling tarmac winding over a mountain pass. Hopefully, something may have changed in the meantime.

At the time we were looking, without success, for White-backed Woodpeckers. A Red Fox in Georgia, not looking very red I’ve never been to Svalbard, so I haven’t ticked off polar bear, but I have seen brown bears on a number of occasions in both Romania and Bulgaria.

Once upon a time, this narrow forest track was the main international road to Romania, but, back then, Romania was a country behind the curtain and perhaps there wasn’t that much traffic? A heavily camouflaged woodpecker (like an owl or a nightjar), more often heard than seen, and even then, possible to see only when it moves.
