Week 16: South Africa and Kruger National Park

After a very long day of 7 hours of driving, 11 hours flying and then 9 hours more driving, we have arrived at our temporary home here in South Africa. Daily park fees are such that we opted for the annual “Wild Card” that is good not only for Kruger, but nearly every park in South Africa. This pass cost us $3850.00

Is my Rhino Still Alive?

The annual number of rhino poached in South Africa last year rose to 1,215, Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa told a media briefing in Pretoria two weeks ago. On average, over 100 rhinos were illegally killed each month. Molewa added that so far this year 49 rhino had been killed countrywide.

A close encounter with a couple of White Rhinos gave me a good opportunity to get a proper look at some Red-billed Ox-peckers Buphagus Erythrorhynchus that often accompany them. Rhino skin is very tough and despite spending much of their time amongst the thorn bushes, scratches are usually only superficial.

Where’s BBOTY?

A small flock of Merops bullockoides were feeding in Kruger National Park, South Africa. Large clumps of droppings, yet to be broken down by bugs, bacteria, or a returning rhino, were used as slightly raised perches. They were chasing flies around a rhinoceros midden.
