Post Apocalyptic Steampunk Birding

This was actually the place where the late Richard ffrench spent much of his time as a music teacher, amassing countless observations of birds that would later form the basis of one of the essential birding guides for Trinidad and Tobago. Noisy Yellow-crowned Parrots indicated that it was time to stop the car and get out. Giant Cowbird.

Typical of the species. Sightings in Trinidad have been sporadic, 38 to be exact since the formation of the T&T Bird Status and Distribution Committee. Both species seemed content to observe each other though. Hopefully they found a suitable place nearby to raise the next generation! The full list can be found here.

Heat in the Tropics

Perhaps his first attempt at raising a family – I’ll be checking on him in a few days! Some birds chose to sit quietly together, perhaps getting to know each other’s quirks and habits before settling down to raise a family. Some species have already fledged their young and are in the process of feeding the juveniles.

Living in Paradise

The Trinidad Motmot is the only endemic species on the island. In addition to the species mentioned before, it is easy to have incredible looks at Red-crowned Woodpeckers , Barred Antshrikes , and Rufous-vented Chachalacas as they frequently are attracted to the fruit feeders. But I know, we’re here for the birds.

I may not have known their correct species names (I thought Tropical Mockingbirds were roadrunners) but I knew they existed. Even though I live in a relatively crowded residential area there still is a reasonable level of greenery around so there are generally approximately twenty regular species. A Saffron Finch on the same tree.

Sniping: The Final Frontier?

Out of the approximately 26 species of snipes worldwide, two have been recorded on Trinidad. The trouble begins with the recognition of the fact that both species of snipe were formerly part of a single species – Common Snipe ( Gallinago gallinago ). On Trinidad it took me some more time until I saw my first snipe.
