We recently got an email about the dangers currently being faced by our whale population as a result of a recent proposal to legalize commercial whaling. As whale lovers, and people who hope to one day be able to see them in the wild, we wanted to share this information with you in case you would like to get involved.

Eleven of them signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) pledging to protect the whale sharks. The participants also agreed to advance the protection of seven shark species that needed protection—the Basking Shark, Great White Shark, Whale Shark, Spiny Dogfish Shark, Porbeagle Shark, and Shortfin and Longfin Mako Sharks.

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.

I also did not understand the centrality of the Delaware Bay to shorebird migration, how timing and geographic design and water quality and tidal streams, the rich salt marshes and protected beaches combine to make this specific area of New Jersey and Delaware “The Most Important Stopover of the Western Hemisphere.” Ah, the photographs!
