In California I smelt the breath a Blue Whale as it passed feet beneath my boat. There is no feeling in the world like knowing your helping something you care about, whether its sharks or puffins, protecting forests or reefs, advancing science or communities. In the Bahamas I swam in a pod of feeding dolphins.

I also did not understand the centrality of the Delaware Bay to shorebird migration, how timing and geographic design and water quality and tidal streams, the rich salt marshes and protected beaches combine to make this specific area of New Jersey and Delaware “The Most Important Stopover of the Western Hemisphere.”

I discovered that they nest on Protection Island, which is off the northeastern coast of the Olympic Peninsula, just west of Port Townsend, in the Juan de Fuca Strait near where it meets Puget Sound.
