Here are a few of my recommendations for some such esteemed members of the Costa Rican avifauna: Forest Football Chicken or FFC (Great Tinamou) – Since tinamou sounds like the perfect representation of an oddly-shaped bird with a small head that gives beautiful tremulous vocalizations, I am sorely tempted to leave this one off the list.

Backyard Birding in Breckenridge

Species that back here in New York either don’t occur or only occur in winter and that necessitate a drive far to the north of New York City were common in the backyard in Breckenridge. And, of course, lots of birds were present in the yard that did not come to the feeders. Mountain Chickadee heading off with a sunflower seed.

The Nonessential Whooping Crane

It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call. Birders know that the light’s not always perfect or even particularly good when you’re trying to tell one species from another. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.
