Countries have been forced to slaughter herds, ban imports on pig products, and implement greater biosecurity measures on farms. African swine fever (ASF) has not entered the U.S. thanks to continuing efforts to prevent this deadly swine disease from reaching the country’s borders.

Stanwood is right near where we live in Seattle and, sadly, home to Pigs Peace Animal Sanctuary which rescues all kinds of animals. The rumor mill has it that Bouvry wants to reopen the plant to service more inexpensively developing markets for its product in Russia, China and other Asian nations. I can only imagine how they feel.

I received an e-mail from the well-meaning Wendy at Compassion in World Farming (which I find an odd combination of words) regarding Egypt's pig cull and asking me to send my protest to the Egyptian Government. But though the pigs weren't originally destined for a mass grave, weren't they destined for slaughter nonetheless?

The film Partitions (running time: 14 min) by Audrey Kali gives an intimate glimpse of the ethical struggles that five small-scale meat farmers face when their animals are slaughtered. In this film, we see farmers interacting with the animals they will eventually transform into food (chickens, pigs and cattle).

The site says food production factories are included , but I doubt that means those involving the slaughter of animals.). Perhaps they are taught that other cultures eat animals other than cows, chickens, fish and pigs, I don't know. The kids made tortillas from scratch and then went to a factory to see how professionals do it.

In the United States pork industry, the vast majority of the more than 100 million pigs raised each year are housed in climate-controlled buildings that protect them from the elements, illness and disease and that allow for individual care. Eating dead animals and animal products is bad for people, bad for animals and bad for the planet.

More greenhouse gas emissions are generated by current methods of meat, dairy and livestock production than by driving cars, so we need to reduce meat consumption and develop alternative food production technologies just as urgently as we need to reduce driving and develop alternative fuel technologies.
